About Sense of Selves

Welcome to Sense of Selves online gallery!

Hi my name is Lux,

I am the curator and one of the presenting artists for Sense of Selves.

Let’s start with how it all began.

The pandemic took me places as an artist and person that scared me, that made me question if I could continue this madness, and that made me question what it meant to me to be successful in the “world of art”.

Flash back to February 2020 when I finally admitted to myself that I wasn’t sure I could make it through an on going amount of time alone. I was facing an eating disorder, anxiety attacks were a common occurrence, and the way I felt my brain melting into this itchy kaleidoscope was making it harder and harder to find my balance so to say.

The time that followed was full of hard work, tears, truth, all ultimately leading to a new level of gratitude. Allowing me to let go, and make room for joy.

Through identifying the different people I had learned to become to keep myself from showing any fear, or anger, or sadness. Through identifying the different characters adapted for different genres of my life, I was able to return to a level of peace.

These paintings are some of my characters, or some of the my selves if you will.

I invite you to perhaps explore the different masks you put on, for different parts of your life. What does it mean to have your “work voice”, your “phone voice”, etc? How often do you shift? Do you shift at all?

The talented artists I have the honor of showing alongside of are each incredible in their own unique ways. What they share is a determination to create and explore themselves even when life doesn’t make it easy to do so. This ability to come back to art, even when it’s the hardest thing to do, is in my opinion what makes someone an artist. Being willing to perhaps fail again and again before getting it right. Being willing to take the risk and never getting “it” at all.

To Ridsza, QTIP, and Bob thank you for letting me show your wonderful art. Having you all in this with me makes it so special, I wouldn’t have been able to make this series without each of you.

Ultimately I’ve come to the understanding that my definition of success will continue to evolve as I peel back my layers. However right now, standing here with these inspiring and talented artists, whom I get to call my friends and sharing our work with you all, I feel successful.
